Kevin Schulz Wins NSSA National Airshow Title!!!

We’ve been hearing about Schulzy for the past few years now. His manager Brian Coe was raving about this new kid coming up in the amateur ranks, one of "Brother's pals" he'd say. But it was until he started taking out NSSA events and started climbing the Open Mens ratings that our ears really perked up. Since then he's been on a tear, and today he took out the NSSA National Surfing Airshow Championships reminding us all just how deep the talent pool in San Clemente really is.

Ghetto Juice interviews….

Ghetto Juice: We started hearing about you earlier this year…. Just this high school kid absolutely killing it in the water…. But to think a year ago we’ve never even heard of Kevin Schulz… When did your surfing start taking off?
Kevin Schulz: I think after the last event of the year (2012), last NSSA season in Oceanside, I ended up taking the win there and that really helped boost my confidence, and it helped my surfing a ton.

Ghetto: San Clemente has so much history… can you name me your all time top five surfers from San Clemente?
Schulzy: I think all 3 of the Guadangs are super rad, definitely some of my favorite human beings. They are always smiling and so amped to surf. I want to be like those guys when I'm older. Two other guys would be Nate Yeomans because of his insane backhand and Greg Long for how hard he charges … all those guys are rad.

Juicy Ghetto: Have you done much surf tripping?
Schulzdogg: Yeah I’ve been to Costa Rica twice, Nicaragua once, and Mexico once… all were super fun trips and I got good waves on them!

Ghetto Juicer: Wow, the world is your oyster!! So many good waves to hit up…. You mentioned being inspired by Yeomans, the Gudangs… you probably see those guys all the time… Do you ever pick their brains for some inside knowledge? How have the elders helped you?
Kevvo: yeah I see the boys out all the time, they are all super knowledgeable with surfing and competition so I'm always asking for their expert advice on heats and technique.

Ghettski: Now let's go back a bit… how old were you when you started surfing and what were those early years like?
Kevin Schulz: I started when I was 10; I actually used to hate the ocean until I did Junior Guards. I started off on a soft top then my dad got me a fish and I think that's when I really got into it.

Ghetto J: Did you ever play any other sports? If so, when did you stop those to focus on surfing?
Kevin: Yeah I used to play soccer baseball volleyball and basketball, but once I turned 10 I wouldn't get out of the water, so I guess that's when I decided to stick with surfing.

Ghetto Juice: Before we go, another kid in north county died from a drug overdose, popping too many pills… are drugs an issue with teens in south county, and what advice do you have for kids who are lured into the unknown….?
Schulz: I heard a little bit about that, it's a very sad story, my advice to the kids who are out there doing that crap is to just stop, all they are doing is slowly killing themselves, I would hate to see anything like that to anyone so my advice is to just not do it.

Ghetto Juice: Before we split, wanna thank your supporters?
Kevin Shulz: First of all I'd like to thank my parents, they are the ones who have really encouraged me to pursue the sport professionally, Brian Coe, my manager has been a huge help, all the guys over at Xcel wetsuits have helped a bunch, the rest of my friends and family, my girlfriend who is so supportive with everything I do, and you guys over at Ghetto Juice magazine for allowing me to be the next Young American! I really appreciate it!
