Hurley Pro Wildcards Or Frothing Giant Killers?

wildcard.jpg

God Bless the Wildcard Surfers. The Giant Killer. Nightmares have been created by them, dreams have been crushed. Take out a top ranked pro and earn legendary status for the rest of your life. Think Nicky Wood in the 80s, or Davo in the old Rip Curl Pros in the 1990s, or Jamie O'Brien in the Pipe Masters. We can always count on the event "wildcards" to truly come in and f-sheet up.

The reason being because the Wildcard's natural instinct is to surf and destroy. Wildcards have nothing to lose. What could be better than taking Slater, Parko or Fanning out of World Title Contention? Nothing … except winning the world title yourself! For pros, getting the wildcard spot is the second best thing to having been seeded into the event to begin with. It's time to kill Giants.

Take a couple of the Wildcard freaks in this year's Hurley Pro at Lowers next week … you've got guys like Dane Reynolds and local Lowers Masters Nate Yeomans and Ian Crane frothing at the bits to take out a Slater or a Mick or a Joel in a heat. These guys rip harder than most of us will ever know, and knocking one of the "big boys" out always gets a lot of press and talk time around surf company watercoolers…. that is unless you're on the receiving end of some wildcard whupass! You might not be too stoked. Yeah, it's all pretty wild, hence the name, and perhaps a little crazy, but it sure makes for a sick storyline.—Skip Snead
