Wardo Murders the Field in Vans World Cup

The common denominator between Sunset Beach and Chris Ward is power. That might explain why Wardo's been on a tear during this year's Vans World Cup at Sunset, winning just about every heat he's surfed! The powerful surf has enabled the full mental Wardo to surf to his ability, easily defeating both world tour surfers and contenders alike.

Wardo dominated his Round 4 heat this morning in pumping 8- to 10-foot surf, one-upping big wave superstar Ian Walsh and eliminating aerial wonderboy Filipe Toledo and Australian mind-blower Adrian "Ace' Buchan. But Wardo's Round 4 was only the tip of the iceberg that is Sunset Beach. Wardo's Round 3 heat was one for the ages and could've been a final any day of the week. Winning that heat as well, he one-upped Jordy Smith and eliminated local standout Pancho Sullivan and French freak Jeremy Flores. They never saw it coming!

But that's not all! Wardo also won his Round 2 heat, one-upping South African upstart Beyrick De Vries and eliminating Australian wonderboy Stu Kennedy and Hawaiian badass Zeke Lau.

The only heat so far Wardo hasn't won was his first round heat in which he placed second. But he still did some damage, especially to both Hawaiian barrel-drainer Danny Fuller and the king of California rail surfing Conner Coffin, both of whom were eliminated thanks to Wardo's polished surfing and ferocious attack. Pancho Sullivan won that heat but, as we reported a few sentences ago, fell to Wardo in a later round.

So what's this mean? It means Wardo's in form and isn't backing down. The other surfers facing him in the quarterfinals should be afraid. Very afraid.—-Skip Snead
