Hurley Pro Wildcards and Alts Get Owned!!

It's not the way it was supposed to be. The Wildcards and Alternates in this year's Hurley Pro at Lowers were supposed to come charging out of the gates. But they didn't. They were supposed to knock out a Slater or a Parko, and crush a few world title hopes. But they didn't. What they got instead was an ASP Top Seed ass whupping.

In the first heat of Round 2, Slater dismembered Dane Reynolds. Dane had a total shocker and never even had a chance. His highest wave score in the heat was a 5.17. Yuck. Slater sure was stoked, even though he appeared to only be surfing in second gear. So that's one Wildcard out of contention. Things didn't stop there.

Ian Crane went up against Parko in the second heat, and although Ian surfed about as good as he possibly could've, it was simply no match for the current World Champion Parko. Parko's mid-8s and high 7's versus Ian's scores in the 6-point range were all it took for Parko to keep on trucking. Ian would head home, but wasn't tripping! How many times will he get a chance to surf against the world champ at his home break? Nothing but winners here, folks.

Then it was Nate Yeomans up against Josh Kerr. And while we thought Nate could easily take him out, it was just the opposite. Kerr went Kerrazy with two good waves compared to Nate's one good one. And another one bit the dust.

By the time the 4th heat of Round 2 came up it was the last Wildcard Mitch Crews versus Adriano de Gnarly. Yeah, Adriano might've had the best heat of the day, surfing in such a way that no wildcard on earth could relate to. Mitch was easily taken out, all in a day's work for the highest ranked Brazzo on tour.

Where do we go from here now that all the Wildcards and Alts are gone? It's pretty basic, really. We batten down the hatches and see what happens with the rest of the field … should be good.—Skip Snead
