Thanks to Simpo, Medina Will Have to Wait

If you're stoked the world title race is headed to Hawaii, don't thank Mick Fanning for winning the Rip Curl Pro Portugal. Thank local boy Brett Simpson. Simpo, who had his second best finish of the 2014 ASP World Tour Season in Portugal, beat Medina in his Round 5 do or die heat. Simpo immediately put the pressure on Medina pocketing a 7-point-plus ride from the start. But Medina had the world title in his eyes and went to town catching a heap of waves and putting the pressure back on Simpo. Then, with just minutes to go, Simpo needed a mid-range score and went left cracking the lip with just enough ooomph to get the score he needed. Meanwhile, Medina paddled in with two minutes on the clock, kissed the world title in Portgual goodbye and left the contest area without so much as a post heat interview. While Simpo would lose his quarterfinal, he was still the man of the hour. Slater, who also needed to do well in Portugal, lost his Round 5 heat as well. Now the world title race will head to Pipe and you know it's going to be a good show. Catch all the heats on demand from Portugal at *www.aspworldtour.com
