He's as American as apple pie. A cheeky smile that could just as easy be the latest print campaign for Crest as it would be for Hurley. A great looking guy, father, husband and the perfect example of what a pro surfer should look, act and surf like in 2013. Brett Simpson. The hottest Brett in pro surfing! Ghetto Juice Editor Skip Snead interviews….

Ghetto Juice: First off, welcome to your first Ghetto Juice interview! Let's go back to the start of the 2012 year with you knowing a hot rat like Kolohe Andino was gonna be on tour and attempt to take the reigns as leader of the OC'ers on the world tour. Currently you and Kolohe are tied on the world tour ratings at #22. But back then, were you like, bring it on!"? What was your mindset with the young hot rat coming up on your heels?
Brett Simpson: Well for me you have to treat them just like another professional now. Even though he was only 18 or 19 he's there to compete and try and win, so you really have to focus in and find those ways to win.

Was there any intimidation?
I wouldn't say I was intimidated but I sure knew he would be a threat in heats. He has the one maneuver game wired and can post big scores on fairly average waves.

But you're the vet…
Right, your first (few) years on tour there is a big learning curve and I think he has experienced that his first year. He surfed some really good heats and then lost, and then just had some bad heats as well, but that's the way it happens and you just have to take it on the chin and better yourself next chance.

Speaking of "chance" .. it's just by chance you're even a surfer, right? Your dad's from Michigan, a football player at heart who went to MSU and later played defensive back for five seasons with the Los Angeles Rams… and here's his son, Brett, a surfer… how is that even possible with such football roots???
(Laughs) Who knows how it happened… but let's thank God it did!

We're not talking Pepperdine Football or CSULB… we're talking Detroit football!! I read on Wikipedia that your pops made a "final-seconds-last-play" end-zone interception - that would have otherwise allowed the NY Jets to win - robbing them of the chance to go on to play the Cincinnati Bengals for the division title. That's mental!
Yeah, big Bill, aka Pops, was the man. A hard hitting safety that is an intense human being (ha!).

And he fathered one of the Greatest Surfers of our Time! Freaky!
I think still to this day he wondered how it has transpired like this but he sure is a big surf fan now.

How did you pick up surfing?
I picked up surfing at around 12 years old 'cause my buddy in class did some of the amateur events ….

And you thought it looked cool?
No I just thought let's give this a try.

And?
And I fell in love!

With a dad from the NFL, you must've been playing bat and ball sports before that?
Yeah I played every ball sport there was and excelled at baseball and basketball but when surfing had hit my veins, I had a new found love….

You never looked back?
Nope, everything got put aside and I decided to chase my dreams.
