The First American to Rattle Kelly Slater

beschen-as-grom.jpg

When Shane Beschen was 17 or 18 the only way he could make a name for himself was to enter and do well in the PSAA / Bud Tour events popping up all over the U.S. From the East Coast to Hawaii and all over So Cal, the Bud Tour provided a road map for young surfers like Shane to see if they had what it takes to compete on the ASP World Tour …. sure enough, Shane was one of those kids who would make it, and within a few years of this photo he'd qualify for the ASP World Tour and be among the first pro surfers to battle it out with Kelly all season long. Along with Sunny Garcia, Shane was perhaps the only other surfer to really "rattle" Slater and get inside his head. This was before Andy came along. Before Joel, Mick and Taj. Before Dane. Before the Brazzo upcharge. Shane (and Sunny) rattled Slater as good as anyone. Legends.
