Young American Ryan Croteau Interview

Ghetto Juice: So Ryan, we got a windswell running today in the OC…. Are you psyched??? Do you still get jitters when the surf is practically pumping?
Ryan Croteau: Always, if you’re pumped or scared. I always get some sort of jitters.
Ghetto Juice: What makes surfing so attractive to you?
Ryan: I’m attracted to surfing by big tubes, hot babes, and good travels.
Ghetto juice: So you like big tubes, nice! Does the thought of surfing huge Pipe and Teahupoo down the line excite you? It's true to say that to compete at the pro level you will have to paddle out in gnarly surf…. is that something you are psyching on?
Ryan: Well I got out to Hawaii in February. Got a few at Pipe…. it was a cool experience. Teahupoo a bit gnarly for me but you never know, maybe one day….
Ghetto Juice: Well we hear you are on the DSC program. What is the DSC program all about and what does the DSC even stand for?
Ryan: DSC stands for DEAN SPORTS CONSULTANTS and it’s run by Kevyn Dean who is a physical therapist and personal trainer. They do surf specific workouts, balancing, core workouts and stuff like that. Kevyn also has a sports psychologist on the program to work with our mental preparation and confidence, Kevyn is 100% committed to us and what he does.
Ghetto Juice: And it’s going well for you so far?
It’s pretty epic.
Ghetto: Cool to know! Maybe that helped you make the Ghetto Juice Airshow final! Not bad for the new kid in town…. Congrats by the way on winning that last month….
Ryan Croteau: Yewwwww! Stoked I was there. It was sick.
Ghetto Juice: So how’d ya get into surfing?
Ryan: I started surfing when I was 7 back in Florida. My dad just kind of threw me out there he had no clue how to surf so he just pushed me into whitewash and I took it from there.
Ghetto Juice: How would you compare your style of surfing to the person who taught you how to surf?
Ryan: (laughs) well my dad’s pushing 240 lbs and can barely stand up. I bought him a board for Christmas a few years ago and he’s gotten better but I haven’t seen him surf since we moved to California 2 years ago. So compared to him I surf alright (laughs).
Ghetto Juice: Do you remember the first photo you ever seen of yourself surfing and what did you think?
Ryan: I remember seeing a photo of my first air posted on the wall of a surfshop. I was doing a wheelie basically but it was pretty awesome to see when I was a grom.
Ghetto Juice: Ergo’s been a big help getting your name out there this past year huh?
Ryan: Ergo treats me very well, I love all the boys over at ergo and appreciate everything they've done for me. When you ride for ergo you actually feel a part of the brand because they keep their team small. So to me riding for Ergo is epic.
Ghetto Juice: Why are there so many hot surfers coming out of Newport lately?
Ryan: Newport’s got sick waves and ramps for progression so everyone’s pushing each other.
Ghetto Juice: Well there you have it… OK grom, we gotta get cracking… take it easy and keep shredding!!—-Skip Snead
