Meet Surfer / Actor John Philbin: He's Not Half the "Turtle" You Thought He Was

john-philbin.jpg

There's a lot more to Turtle than meets the eye, or that his character's hapless nature would lead you to believe. He's been an actor and surfer nearly all his life… a trip to Bali in 1980 helped him make sure he always did both. Before The North Shore, he was in Stephen King's Children of the Corn., and that's gnarlier than any surf movie! So he's got that going for him…. Then he gets the Turtle gig and then after that sharing the sceen with Patrick Swayze in Point Break… and then he did even bigger films, like Tombstone with Val Kilmer. Blockbuster! He even taught Kate Bosworth how to surf for her role in Blue Crush. Needless to say he's been up to a lot more than most surfers think…. Kurt Steinmetz recently caught up with Turtle, we mean, John, in Hawaii, and here's what they talked about …..

Ghetto Juice: Why do you think the North Shore is the proving grounds of surfing?

John Philbin: The waves, I mean there are so many challenging waves it can be a beautiful and tough place simultaneously. Like a field of grass, that looks beautiful, You take your shoes off and run across And it will have those stickers in it. And the waves..You look out and think it's so perfect, that's a perfect wave, that looks like Indo! Then you paddle out and you get slammed on the reef Really hard and bust your board, Half of it's going out in a current. And your swimming in and you got a little cut on you And you're like F***! ..sorry! I swore! And then there's the people too. I think the surfers are the greatest in the world that surf the North Shore. A lot of people move here just to surf because it's got a power, it's got a mana that can't really be defined or explained but it's always been here and always will be and that's why I like it as a proving grounds or a mecca. It gets so crowded now during that little window, that jockeying for position or whatever it takes to make it down the ledge of a bombing magazine type wave requires a certain something that… I don't know what that is only pros know what that is or backyard chargers it's a special quality.

Ghetto Juice: What is your take on Orange County surfers on the North Shore Hawaii?

John Philbin: For all Orange County surfers coming to Hawaii It should be required that they watch the North Shore, before they come over…on Hawaiian Airlines ha ha! And then they should really pay attention to it and they should really respect the locals when they come over. Treat the locals with respect, realize they are a visitor, Realize that this place comes with its own set of rules, and it's going to be here after they leave so try to give as much as you get.

Ghetto Juice: What’s your favorite spot to surf?

John Philbin: (Long pause) I like Five-0’s.

Ghetto Juice: What one Turtle quote from the movie North Shore is an actual quote that you've taken with you in your everyday life?

Turtle: Here on the North Shore, we treat friends Mo bettah"…Because, even though I'm not from Hawaii when I go to there I realize how many nice people there are and how important it is to treat everyone nice!
