Oh, Marie. We'll Never Forget You!

It's still hard to think we just saw Newport do something no one has ever seen it do. At least not in this generation. Actually, not ever. I know surfers who have been surfing here since the 60s and they also said they've never seen it this big, and this clean. It was all because of a freak hurricane named Marie that moved ever so slow with winds ever so heavy. It was pretty cool that we all got to experience something the Hawaiians only experience: an authentic Big Wednesday. And it was. It was really big. And if you're a top pro surfer, or simply a psycho with a death wish, manageable. The rest of the coast was pummelled as well. Beaches eroded like they've never eroded before. Piers were shot, and broken. Waves that have never been surfed were surfed, like inside the Long Beach harbor. Sure the water was gross, but who cares? Surfing Marie was something all of us will never forget. Not the groms, not the old carps, and not the pros. Yeah, we're gonna miss Marie, and pray it happens again in our lifetime, but for now, the memories will suffice. Yeah, it was a Big Wednesday all right. John Milus would be proud.—Skip Snead (a little surfed out, but still in one piece)
