Mick Fanning Helps Local Grom at Unruley Pipe!

Recently on a macking day at Pipe that saw a couple sets imploding out on third reef, OC's Tyler Gunter and a couple other groms decided to paddle out and step up to the challenge. He made it out in time to take a clean up set on the head and then lost his board. Mick Fanning saw him and gave him his board to paddle in while Mick swam in through the heavy current and gnarly shorebreak. How cool is that? Now that's a real champ and an experience we're sure Tyler will never forget! G+J's Kurt Steinmetz got with Tyler to get the whole story.

Ghetto Juice: So tell us what happened?
Tyler Gunter: So I paddled out to Pipe and there were only about five people out and it was big and stormy with a lot of wash-through sets. Right when I got out there I got caught by one of the bigger wash-through sets and broke my board on the first wave and took three more on the head after that. Right when I started swimming in more sets started coming and Mick paddled up to me and offered his board so I could get in easier. I took his board and caught a wave in before the set, while Mick swam in through the set and the crazy shorebreak. Once he got to the beach I gave him his board back and thanked him.

G+J: Is that the biggest Pipe you've ever been out in?
T+G: Not the biggest but definitely the scariest. It was all over the place.

G+J: Heard there were a couple bombs on third reef, huh?
T+G: Yeah, there was a lot (laughs). You would see them breaking out there then they would hit second reef and break on top of everybody.

G+J: Gnarly! Were you the only grom out there?
T+G: No. I was out there with John Mel and Nolan Rapoza.

G+J: Rad! Pretty cool of Mick to help you out and it sounds like you've been having one heck of a time on the North Shore!
T+G: Yeah, I'm super stoked he did that and it's been super fun over here. The waves have been sick everyday!
