Banting Wins Vans US Open Pro Junior Title

Twenty-year-old Matt Banting from Port Macquarie, Australia took out the ASP 2-star rated Vans US Open of Surfing Pro Junior yesterday in small surf on the south side of the famed Huntington Beach Pier. Banning, armed with a 5'9" shaped by local foam carver Tim Stamps, utilized the speed, power, flow and difficulty of tricks to secure the win over some of the world's top junior surfers.

A lot of people have been complaining about the surf, and many of the top pros didn't even show up. But not Matt. Yeah I love it over here," he told Ghetto Juice. "It's sort of like a second home. I've been coming here since I was 14." And the time he's spent surfing on the southside has paid off in the amount of $4,000 and a shot at even more cash since he's still in the Main Event that wraps up today.

For some groms, the chance to surf in the US Open Pro Junior is everything, and while he took full advantage of surfing in it, his eyes have been set on the ASP 6-Star prime. "I'll use the confidence from this win and put it into the Main Event," he said. "I'm really here to get points for the 6-star." Not that he needs them. Right now he's sitting comfortably at world number two on the World Qualification Series and with his result here in the 6-star he's all but guaranteed a spot on next year's WCT where he'll fulfill his childhood dream of competing against the likes of Burrow, Parkinson, Fanning and one Kelly Slater. "I've surfed against him (Slater) before with a few wildcards I've had, like at Snapper (Rocks) and all," he said, "but actually being on tour with him will be another story. I can't wait." And neither can we. —- Skip Snead
