Kanoa broke his leg surfing a week ago. He'll be fine. Click the black bar to read the full interview….

Ghetto Juice: How did you break your leg?
Kanoa: I was surfing Winkipop which is a perfect right pointbreak right next to Bells and I got a left with a pretty solid air section and I lofted a full rotation and over rotated, landed in a good spot but my leg was in a weird position and heard a pop/crunch.

Ghetto Juice: Ouch! Describe the pain ….
Kanoa: Well, the first 30 seconds I was in complete shock, I knew I broke it. It hurt really really bad but I tried to stay calm until someone would help me.

Ghetto Juice: So I guess you could relate to that basketball guy who broke his leg on National TV recently during the NCAA tourney?
Kanoa: Definitely not! My bone didn't come out of my skin, it stayed inside but it was surely sticking out (half-laughs).

Ghetto Juice: Well it totally sucks. So what type of well wishes have you been receiving?
Kanoa: I've been getting alot of messages and stuff from all my friends wishing me a fast recovery and keeping me positive, and alot of the guys that were competing at Bells said some really nice things. Especially Kelly, he really made me feel better about my injury when it first happened.

Ghetto Juice: How long will you be out of the water and what's the prognosis looking like?
Kanoa: They first told me I was going to be in my leg plaster (it goes all the way to my groin) for 6 weeks, then rehab after, but now they've brought it down to only another 3 weeks in my plaster after checking the X rays. So I dont really know, Kevyn Dean just told me I could be back in the water in 5 weeks maybe. So as if now its kind of in the air.

Ghetto Juice: Anything you'd like to say to our readers, perhaps advice on how not to break your leg?
Kanoa: Hmm, don't go left at a right point break. (laughs)
