"Ho, Brah!" with John Salanoa

"A Phoenix is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor.”

That said, welcome to Ho, Brah! Summer of the Phoenix

by John Salanoa

As summer starts up with a good to great run of combo’s, south swells and the water looking as beautiful and turquoise as ever, water temps in the early summer months already hanging in the low to mid 60’s, there seems to be a rebirth of hope and drive in this sport called surfing. The industry did get much smaller these past six months with companies cutting a grip of people all now looking for jobs and hitting the unemployment lines, but in the early months of this summer the rebirth has begun; there are new guys at the helm of the major brands, a new leader in the ASP and more startup companies hitting the market this summer—-more than I can remember in years past. There are phone apps, clothing brands, webpages, blogs, board shapers, and non ASP surf events all making the push to evolve the industry.

Ghetto Juice Surf Magazine is one of those startups, now in its third year of publication, and is getting noticed all over the world. There are six new clothing lines in Huntington Beach alone and three in Newport Beach that are starting to make a lot of noise. The buzz is real, people are making the moves to help sustain the industry and, from what I see, all are helping change the rules of the game. Only time will tell if all or any of these startups have the legs to make it in the long run. To tell you the truth it is up to us to make any of these new companies a success, but only if we stand behind these brave new souls who in most cases put up all their finances and bet the bank on a new start to an industry that has burned itself to the ground. We asked for them to come in and make a difference and they did, but will we be grateful and buy these new products, support the new blogs, scan the new surf forecast sights, ride the underground shapers boards? I hope so.

As the water warms up and the bodies hit the beach, summer flings start, schools out and the surfer girls are hot, and as you travel this summer with the family on vacation or take a surf trip with the boys, remember you’re surfing in the Time of the Phoenix! The rules are changing and we are all writing the future of this sport. Rise up out of the ashes and help raise surfing to new heights, pick your startups to support and fly high! Life is short and waves are plenty. Get your wave count up! —-JS
