Opinion: What happened to the HB Pier?

hb.jpg

An Open Question from HB Pier local, Mike Huseman….

How did we let the Pier get to this? So frustrated. The Pier bowl was really good this am, however for the first time in my life I got out of the water due to the KOOK factor. Got ran over twice by barns who can't surf and had no business surfing where they were. On top of that, had several close calls of getting ran over by people who can't surf. This is getting so out of control that it's now a safety issue. WHAT HAPPENED? We used to keep a lid on things. Now we have selfish people in the lineup who have no etiquette, who haven't taken the time to learn the rules and disregard others' safety in the water. It's ruining it because everything is so politically correct now that we've turned into a nation of pu$$ies. It takes a$$holes smacking a few people and yelling at them to keep the majority of all the a$$holes under control. This crap wasn't tolerated years ago and the line up was enjoyable for all because everyone knew their place and there was a place for everyone. Now it's just a joke.

Mike's Facebook lit up with friends commenting on what's become of the HB Pier, and here's some of those comments below ….

Cal Phillips: It's why I don't go there, esp. on weekends.

Andrew Ebert: $600 of gear, 50 cents of skill.

Andrew Ebert: The term "Surf City" is actually pronounced "Kook Magnet"

Ron McNab: Weekends have always been an issue. The issue is RESPECT it's just not there anymore.

John Parmenter: You can thank the HB council and cops for that!!!! Even verbal assault will get you in jail these days!!! Social media and phone cams catch everything!!!! Times have changed!!!! It's funny too because even half the local guys back then cried we were bullies!! I dont get it??? Pick and choose your sessions!!! I haven't surfed with more than five guys out in 2 years!!! Stay away from the barns!!!!

Chris Mathwig: Just came back from a walk down the pier with the family and noticed the same thing. The line up, if you want to call it that, looked like a complete cluster f%&k from up top. And don't get me started on the people fishing off the pier!!!

Jack St Nicholas: We need enforcers.

Kaipo Guerrero: Hold down your local line up. I know it's hard with cell phones and video everywhere. Get sneaky. Get your boys together. Whisper, don't yell at donkeys.

Brett Ballou: The problem is too many new surfers over the past 10 years who weren't taught etiquette…..so we are f%$#ed forever unless someone starts laying down the rules again. Everybody would learn quickly but it would require a true renaissance of all the locals. All our 20-30yr old locals are too politically correct to do anything about it … might take us grandpa's to get it done. I agree with Kaipo!

Carey Howe: Welcome to Surf City, the overmarketed stucco building mega turd.

Tristan Bates: U know why? Because people from everywhere move in or want to surf there. "If they have fun theyll come back". No one wants to make it ugly.
