San Clemente's Ethan Carlston ... Lucky to Be Alive

The bad news is that San Clemente local Ethan Carlston suffered a serious head injury while surfing on the North Shore this week. The good news is that he's going to recover 100%. Here's an update from his dad via Ethan's Facebook page ….

Aloha, friends and family. This is Ethan's father, Eric. Wanted to let everyone involved in Ethan's life know that he was in a surfing accident with an extensive head injury.

I got the phone call while skiing in Mammoth with my daughter over the holiday. The hospital had initially released him with some staples in his head. Thank God he called me on Thanksgiving not sounding like his typical self. I asked him to return to the hospital for further evaluation and he told he was fine and not to worry!!!

THANK GOD I didn't listen to his advice. I arrived on the North Shore on Saturday morning and we (meaning myself and my friends Jay Alvarrez, Eros Exarhou, and Jordan Black) took Ethan to a trauma center. After extensive tests and a cat scan they determined he had a sub-dermal brain bleed. He is currently recovering and will make a 100% recovery. The moral of this story - head injuries kill and without proper diagnosis, treatment and a good network of friends the outcome could've been much tragically different. X-rays are not sufficient! Always seek a second opinion and use the appropriate testing measures in all injury cases.

//What are you thankful for this holiday season? I'm thankful to have my son full of energy and life! //

Mahalo,
Ethans Father
