Local Surfer Launches Drug Free Surf Campaign

The message is clear. Drugs kill. Always have, always will. Unfortunately too many of our kids are missing the message. With the recent passing of HB grom Chris Love, local surfer and Ghetto Juice photographer John Salanoa has taken it into his own hands to start a new movement called "DFS" that will hopefully inspire kids from all over the world to finally say no to drugs, period.

"DFS stands for Drug Free Surfer," says Salanoa, "which would mean you are a Drug Free Surfer and you love Drug Free Surfing."

The movement's already happening and moving along fast. The DFS Facebook fan page already has hundreds of supporters, and he's also enlisted several local pros including Nate Yeomans, Brad Ettinger, National High School Mens Varsity Surfing Champ Matty Passaquindici, US Amateur Champ Kanoa Igarashi and ASP World Tour surfers Brett Simpson and Travis Logie to help spread the word about DFS and his Drug Free Surfing mission.

"My goal is to treat this just like any other branding but using just (letters) DFS," John says. "This will make DFS a conversation piece, as stickers start to pop up on DFS surfers, kids and peers will ask that surfer, "What is DFS?, to which that surfer will then let that person know, "I'm a Drug Free Surfer".

Here at Ghetto Juice we think it's high time someone stood up for the kids out there. Drugs and our Youth is a tough subject, and it's even tougher to talk about with others. Often times kids are doing this alone, in a closet, hoping no one finds out until, bam, it's too late and they're looking down from heaven at all their friends paddling out in their honor. If DFS can turn one kid away from doing drugs, then Mission Accomplished. Good work John! We knew you were our "Resident Hawaiian" for a reason.—-Skip Snead
