A few words with Dax McGill

16-year-old girl grom sensation from the North Shore, Dax McGill has been racking up quite a bit of passport stamps lately and making her mark as she goes along! Circumnavigating the globe from Australia to Chile, where she recently won the Sunset Beach Pro Junior and 3-star Maui and Sons Women’s Pichilemu Pro at Punta de Lobos. When she’s not traveling around the world earning QS points, we can find her out charging her home of the North Shore with her brother Finn. We recently caught up with her after she came back from China, to find out a little more about her.

G+J: How is it growing up as a grom on the North Shore of Hawaii?

D+M: Being in the middle of chaos and surfing good waves is more then fun

G+J: What wave on the North Shore suits your style best?

D+M: Rockies and pipe

G+J: We've seen you out at some pretty big Pipe, what's the biggest you've surfed it? Umm I don't know. I just see my brother go out and I just go. I probably should watch it more before I go out but then the butterflies come in to play. Haha

G+J: What's your scariest North Shore experience so far?

D+M: I ripped open my ear drum at pipe about 3 weeks ago and that was pretty scary. Your equilibrium gets thrown off and you don't know which way is up or down.

G+J: If you could pick somewhere else to live, where would it be and why?

D+M: New York ahah. I love the city and the art and style there and to switch it up from surfing is good. But I would still want to travel a lot living in oahu to other countries.

G+J: Pretty awesome that your whole family surfs, did that influence you to become a competitive surfer?

D+M: We always were at the beach so I think I just naturally got into it and enjoyed it a lot and then started doing contest with my brother.

G+J: Who are some of your Hawaiian influences?

D+M: Keanu Asing for his determination, John John Florence for his style and being about to surf anything

G+J: You seem to be traveling quite a bit, what has been one of your favorite experiences this year?

D+M: Yeah it's a dream. I love it. Even the long plane rides because then you know your going some where special. I think my favorite place I've been is Chile. It was absolutely beautiful. I've never seen anything like it.

G+J: When you and your brother are out surfing, who gets the most waves?

D+M: Me because I always drop in on him haha

G+J: Describe the perfect day for Dax McGill…

D+M: Wake up crack of dawn. Go surf perfect rockies. Listen to old music and draw or paint. Then get food at waialua bakery. After that hang out at the beach and surf pipe. Then end the day at the skatepark.

G+J: Who are some of the people that you look up to and have shaped who you are?

D+M: Steph Gilmore. Her style in and out of the water. Also her personality is really cool

G+J: Any advice for up and coming girl groms?

D+M: Keep dancing, drawing new lines and having fun

G+J: Final words, thoughts?

D+M: Thank you!
