For the third year in a row Ghetto Juice magazine has partnered with the OC Register to bring you the Ghetto Juice OC Freesurfer of the Year. This year’s winner is San Clemente-based freesurfing icon and star of the Vans Get ‘N Classic surf movie series Big Dane Gudauskas. Skip Snead interviews….

Ghetto Juice: Can you remember the first time you ever heard the word “freesurfer”?
Dane Gudauskas: I think the first time I ever heard the term ‘freesurfer’ was in the Jack McCoy movies (late 90s) and watching Margo (Aussie Brendan Margieson) rip. I think he opened up a lot of doors.

GJ: I’m curious how a freesurfer like yourself defines what being a freesurfer means?
DG: Anyone, really, that just goes out and doesn’t hold back. They don’t have to be ‘freesurfers’ necessarily. But I think what being a freesurfer means is being open minded. There are no limitations to enjoying all aspects of equipment, cultures, locations, and size of waves. I love everything and every single thing that makes surfing so special.

GJ: Is freesurfing the correct title to describe what you do?
DG: I don’t really care about titles and I feel like I don’t view myself according to any titles, I just feel like if I’m inspired by something, I’ll do it.

GJ: Ironically enough, there’s nothing ‘free’ about it. Sure must cost a lot of money to travel the world like you do….
DG: Yeah it costs a bit of money but the experiences are priceless and I’d never second guess it.
