Ghetto Juice gets a Phoner from Tom Curren

It's not everyday your phone rings with three times ASP World Champion Tom Curren on the other end. But that's exactly what happened to us recently when Tom called to tell us about his new album In Plain View which was released this Spring. Shoots, maybe you even caught one of his shows around the Southland recently. Hold on, the phone is ringing ….

Ghetto Juice (excitedly answering the call already knowing it was TC on the other line): Hey what’s up Tom?
Tom Curren (voice crackling over a bad cell phone connection): Hey, Skip, how’s it going?

Ghetto Juice: Great, how you doing?
Tom Curren: Good just pulling up to the base right now for a surf…

Ghetto Juice: Yeah it’s pumping down here right now, must be some good peaks up there…
Tom Curren: I think it will be pretty good. It’s sort of dropped I guess but it should be alright.

Ghetto Juice: So what’s been happening? How’s everything going with that new album?
Tom Curren: Good. Just been pretty busy these last couple weeks, ya know, doing a few shows up and down the coast. Just kinda doing a little promotion on the album and stuff.

Ghetto Juice: Cool. I know you’ve always played music, a lot of drums and all, but when did you start taking it more seriously?
Tom Curren: Uhhmm, not really until recently, maybe like in the last year…uh, maybe more than that, but just like in the last year…

Ghetto Juice: Really? And you’ve already got a new album out? Must have a great crew…
Tom Curren: Yes. Yeah we did. We had really great availability in the studio and really good players….

Ghetto Juice: And you wrote all the songs, yeah?
Tom Curren: Yeah.

Ghetto Juice: Have you always been a writer?
Tom Curren: Yeah these are songs that I’ve had … some of them are pretty old, like ideas I’ve had, and some of them are newer. But it’s been the sort of a thing, like a hobby, trying to get better at it.

Ghetto Juice: How did you get into playing guitar back in the day?
Tom Curren: Yeah well it started when I was 14, yeah, in a youth group. I had a teacher there who was really good … inspired by Simon and Garfunkel and The Beatles, and when it came to guitar he knew pretty much everything.

Ghetto Juice: How do you like this life as a musician compared to your days as a pro surfer? Can you even compare the two?
Tom Curren: They’re very different, yes. I would say they’re very very different.

Ghetto Juice: Any worldwide travel plans with the new album?
Tom Curren: Actually nothing right now. We got a couple things we’re doing around California right now but nothing tour wise…

Ghetto Juice: So I was listening to the songs. Summerland’s my fav. You got a pretty rad voice!
Tom Curren: Thanks!

Ghetto Juice: Where you been hiding that voice all these years?
