Seaside Super grom Cole McCaffery has been having a pretty good month, turning 10, recently getting on Billabong and a trip to the North Shore of Hawaii. He’s also been racking up some impressive wins in the NSSA Open Supergroups division! Not to bad for this 10 year old goofy foot from Cardiff! We recently sat down with him to find out a little more and see what stokes him out!

G+J: When did you start surfing, and how?
C+M: I used to stand up on a body board in the whitewater when I was like 4 or 5, but didn’t really start getting outside on a surfboard on my own until I was 7. My sister Ella and I had learned on mushy waves by the Cardiff campground. Once I figured out how to get outside and get better waves, I only wanted to surf.

G+J: What’s it like growing up and getting to surf Seaside reef every day?
C+M: Seaside is like a big neighborhood with a couple of fun peaks, kids, pros and families everywhere. It’s good a lot of the time, but like any break, it can be amazing or horrible depending on the day. It’s easier for the waves to be good if you are only 70 pounds. The crew at Seaside is kind of like a big family, and I’m super lucky to be the youngest brother of a ton of rad surfers. Nick Holdman has always been super cool and has helped me learn a lot. Levi (Slawson) is like my brother; he always gives me tips and helps me at contests but doesn’t cut me any slack either. Caleb (Crozier) is always pushing all of us, too, or at least backpaddling us and teaching us how to fight for waves (laughs).

G+J: Who are some of your favorite surfers at Seaside?
C+M: Well, I probably surf with my sister Ella more than anyone, but Seaside is Rob Machado’s home break, so it’s pretty cool to see him surf regularly. JD Lewis, David & Nick Suhadolnick, the Marshals, Taylor Clark, Finn, Seabass and Cal Corn, Levi and Noah Slawson, Micah and Caleb Crozier, Malia Faramarzi, Alyssa and Ty Spencer, Taylor & Marty Mathiesen, Jackson Butler, Coby & Marty Gilchrest… Damien Hobgood surfs at Seaside, too, and he is the nicest guy in the world.

G+J: We hear you also have a wakeboarding background. Tell us about that.
C+M: Well, my dad and mom were into wakeboarding and my grandpa has a boat up in Seattle, so I kind of started there. We also have a MasterCraft at the Carlsbad Lagoon, so we do get to ride some. We do a lot more wakesurfing now than wakeboarding. It’s super fun.

G+J: You also just got back from Hawaii. How was that?
C+M: Hawaii is the most amazing place ever. We were on Oahu and surfed the South, West and North sides. The waves were amazing, huge, messy, glassy, small … we got everything in 4 days.

G+J: What was your favorite experience over there?
C+M: It all was incredible, but the chance to surf Pipeline, Backdoor and Off the Wall all in one day in fun-size surf was the best.

G+J: Favorite wave?
C+M: We surfed small Pipeline and I’m a goofy footer, so that was about as fun as it gets.

G+J: You’re already building quite the travelogue at age 10. What has been your favorite trip?
C+M: This last trip to Oahu was definitely my favorite trip. It was super fun to be there with Noah (Steinmetz), Sam (Sibley) and Zane (Booth). Our family has also been to Kauai a few times, too. The last time we got to go by boat to the Napali Coast with my dad’s friend Ryan. We surfed Honopu with just the six of us on the boat. That was pretty cool.

G+J: Describe the perfect day for Cole.
C+M: Stop at VG Donuts on the way to pumping Seaside in the morning. Surf with all the Seaside groms, then skate to Roberto’s to get a bean and cheese burrito with sour cream and French fries for lunch. Then skate back to Seaside and surf until it’s dark. Sleep. Repeat.

G+J: Your sister and dad surf, too. Do you guys surf a lot together?
C+M: Ella and I surf together every day. We go to the same school so my mom picks us up and we go straight to surf. My dad surfs with us as much as he can, but mainly on weekends and trips.

G+J: What are your goals for the future?
C+M: Win a Southwest regional championship, then Nationals and one day surf the WQS, then the WCT. I also want to finish school and continue to get good grades in case that doesn’t work out.

G+J: Any final thoughts, people you’d like to thank?
C+M: Well, I could not have done any of this without my mom and dad and my sister. I’m super happy to get to surf for Billabong, Rusty Surfboards and Surf Ride, so thank you to my family and my sponsors. I promise to do the best I can.
