The Ghetto Juice Interview with Christian Fletcher

Christian.jpg

You know someone’s a legend beyond words when they need “no introduction” and believe you me, Christian Fletcher needs no introduction. We recently sat down with him on April 17, 2013, more than 25 years since he changed the way pro surfers surf and the rest of us think. Here it is….the Ghetto Juice interview with Christian Fletcher.

Interview by Steve Cabler and Skip Snead

The interview starts with Christian noticing a pair of nunchuks on the wall…

Christian Fletcher: Those nunchuks are pretty cool…. You know how to use them?

Ghetto Juice: Yeah, slowly. Do you know how to use them? Wanna try them?

CF: Not right now, but maybe in a little bit. I had some in Hawaii before, but they had metal f*ckin studs on them and you learn how not to hit yourself pretty quick. Couple times you get racked in the head and you’re over it.

GJ: You remember click-clacks?

CF: Yeah I remember click clacks! Hey you guys watch that show on f*ckin’ National Geographic called 80s? F*ckin’ pretty sick. The decade that defined us.

GJ: What with the Reagan years and all?

CF: No, America in general…. (but yeah) Reagan said four good words that brought down the Berlin wall: “Gorbachev, take down the wall!”

GJ: I remember the cover of that one Surfer in 1989, the Anti Standard issue…. Does that trip you out that aerial surfing was once considered Anti Standard?

CF: F*ck, maybe they’re Anti Standard but it was my everyday occurrence. (looking at the old covershot) Fuck, Lowers was so good then….

GJ: It’s still good, isn’t it?

CF: Nope. There’s no point. Like you see how far out it breaks now? It used to break right next to the point.

GJ: How special were those days for you?

CF: Oh sweet. Lowers was one of the most rippable waves I’ve ever surfed. Aside from tubes, it was one of the most high performance waves to surf probably. The wave just sucks now. I feel bad for the kids. They f*ckin’ got shitty music … the waves aren’t nearly as good ….tight pants.

GJ: Did you have surfers who influenced you growing up?

CF: A couple that, well, yeah…. (then changing the subject) Two of the best things my mom taught me growing were how to parallel park and how to roll joints.
