$5,000 Summer Stories: Buttons Benefit Rocks!

Lido-5-Summer-Marquee-Square.jpg

We're stoked to announce last night's event "Ghetto Juice Presents Five Summer Stories: A Benefit for Buttons" raised more than $5,000 toward Team Buttons Kaluhiokalani as he battles and fights this ugly cancer! And that's just one night in Newport Beach! Imagine if every surf town held their own little event?

Like Buttons himself, the night was "full on" high performance stoke with enough Aloha Spirits to fill the planet. Warmest thank yous to every single person who bought a movie ticket, a raffle ticket, bidded on an auction item or spun the Wheel of Shakas. It turned out better than we anticipated!

A million shakas to everyone for making the event so special!! VERY special thanks to Greg MacGillivray and Jim Freeman for making such a classic film! It's as good today as it was then, if not mo' bettah. And we were so blessed with the presence of two Incredible Guests of Honors and Pipeline surfing legends David Nuuhiwa and Rory "The Dog" Russell!! Your words were well received, everyone loved you guys, and we were honored to have you there!!

Heaps more shakas to both Kurt Steinmetz and Stefan Jeremias for all their hard work to help make this event even possible! And of course to little Stuey Jeremias for making those "Buttons for Buttons" pins! (Just so you know, we gave ours to Rory Russell.) Millions more thanks to Rockin Fig for emcee'ing, and Sumo Sato for the prayer for Buttons before the movie. And to Bali Bombing Survivor and thrash metalist Crabby Cabler who suggested Five Summer Stories when asked out of blue what 70s movie he thought we should show … and the rest is Orange County Surf Movie Night History.

Truth is, none of this would've been possible without all the companies and individuals who donated product, time and or money toward the cause …. including Matt Stone of BBR, the crew at F2 Surf Wax, Avocado Cafe LLC, Lido Regency Theater, Volcom, Quiksilver, Hurley, Loren at Red Bull, Duke and Ben Aipa, our favorite surfer "Turtle" (John Philbin), Ergo, Mophie, Roark, Bud Llamas and Roger Baltierra and the 17TH Street Boardshop Family, DFS's John Salanoa, Steve from Amphibian USA, Greg Noll da Bull, RVCA, Filtrate, Go Pro, Black Flys, Catch Surf, The Crew of Frog House Surf Shop for hawkin' tickets, Rockin Fig Surf HQ, Medi Bendanna and crew, John Wayne Cancer Foundation (it was as if the Duke was there himself), Ocean Minded for getting us psyched on Lowers, Josh Paskowitz for the amazing artwork, Noodles and The Offspring for the signed guitar, Primo Beer for the afterparty at Malarkys, Scabs, our red hot advertising sales ripper Nick Van De Kamp, the Waxy Wax crew, Jared Sislin and Hank Foto and The Mint Fine Art Gallery crew, HK and all the boys from Mauli Ola Foundation, artist Russell Crotty, photog Don Bigelow and family, artist/filmmaker Greg Weaver, Sol Spot for the sickest Buttons Tees ever!! (Check them out on SolSpot.com) … and of course all the "boys" in Newport for showing up to support a Hawaiian legend! Let's pray he beats this!— Skip Snead

And a Final Word from one of the event coordinators and Ghetto Juice family members Kurt Steinmetz
"I am honored to be able to help in any way to a man who has given so much to others! I was just a small part in the big picture and the thanks should go out to all those involved, including those who could not attend but have helped in whatever way they could and of course to those who came out to support last night! If you met Buttons in person (even if only for a couple minutes) you have experienced his warm generosity and aloha spirit and even if you haven't, chances are you were influenced by his innovative surf style that was light years ahead! Last night was awesome and I am stoked to have shared the evening with so many great people trying to help an awesome man!"—Kurt Steinmetz, September 2013
