Is the World Ready for a Brazilian World Champ?

Lord knows the Brazilian pros on tour have been chomping at the bit since the Tour's inception in the late 70's. And considering what a run the Brazzo's had in the 90's, it's really hard to believe they've had no World Champions. For some reason or another a Brazzo has never completely busted down the door in surfing, i.e. won a world title. Never say Never. As of right now Adriano De Souza is sitting on top of the elite ASP World Title ratings. Ahead of Slater. Ahead of Parko. Ahead of Fanning. The headlines in South America scream, ADRIANO DE SOUZA SECURES ASP WORLD #1 RANKING … but here in the States we haven't heard much talk about it. Is it because the USA and Australia just simply aren't ready to pass off the baton to … Brazil?

Adriano Blowin' up!!!

Seems so. Unfortunately most of the American and Hawaiian and Australian surfers are bred to think Brazzo's are rude, arrogant, and a little too passionate about surfing. Truth is Brazilians by nature are the friendliest folks on the planet. Don't think so? Go to Brazil on a surf trip yourself. Hang out and surf with the locals and see how many dinners you're invited to; see how many parties you're invited to; see how many times you're invited to go surf a secret spot. Truth is it's high time we had a Brazzo world champion. It would be good for the sport.—Skip Snead
