Just imagine if there was Social Media "back then"… For example, let's say you're Bruce Brown, it's the early 1960s and you just finished editing your newest surf movie. Well, the next step would be cutting a trailer and posting to You Tube, and then sharing the link on Facebook and then Twittering about it to everyone you knew or even didn't know. Toss in a little Instagramming from the global surf trip and it's a slamdunk marketing campaign, all performed from the comfort of your own home.
That is, if there was Social Media back then. But there wasn't.
Surf movie makers like Bruce didn't have the web to rely on. They did it the Old Fashioned way. Word of Mouth and Just Plain Hype. Worked then, but could it work today? (One wonders if a movie today could be successful without being promoted on Social Media?)
In the meantime, check out the Trailer for Endless Summer below and imagine just how excited Bruce and the boys were for this movie to be released …. Blood sweat and tears. Just no Social Media. —-Skip Snead
