Q&A with Young American Alyssa Spencer

Ten year old Alyssa Spencer from Carlsbad, CA is the new breed of super grommet rippers and along with a handful of other girls is leading the way into a new future of women's surfing! She's not just getting noticed by tearing up her local turf in Carlsbad but for taking down girls that are much older and bigger than her in contests! I mean, seriously, imagine being in high school and getting smoked by a kid who's still in grade school! That's what's up with Alyssa, and while she is looking forward, other girls are looking back over their shoulders. Ghetto Juice interviews….

Ghetto Juice: Tell us how old you were when you first started surfing and why?
Alyssa: I think I was around three or four. I started surfing because I would watch my dad surf and thought it looked really fun.

You've been making a lot of finals lately, what's your most memorable win?
My most memorable win was the WSA at Golden West HB a couple months ago when I won both the Girls u12 and Girls u14. It was challenging because all of the girls were surfing really good.

So you've been beating some girls that are much older than you, how does that feel?
Surfing against the older girls is always tough. They are strong and have good power in their surfing. They also have more contest experience than me. So whenever I can get a win over them it feels great! The older girls are always so nice and encouraging to me all the time. I really look up to all of them because they rip.

Do you have a signature move or surfing strong point?
I feel like my surfing strong point is my backside snap.

Who are some of your favorite pro girl and amateur surfers?
My favorite pro girls are Sally Fitzgibbons, Stephanie Gilmore, and Carissa Moore. My favorite amateur girls are Tia Blanco and Malia Osterkamp.

Describe the perfect surf day for you….
Wake up at 6:00 am to perfect, four-foot Vland with no one out; sun shinning bright and super warm water. I'd surf with all my friends for a four hour session and then go get lunch at Ted's Bakery and have some Acai bowls. Then go back and surf until sunset.

When you're not surfing, what other things do you like to do?
Skateboard and hang out with my friends.

We hear you've been traveling quite a bit, where ya been? What are some of the highlights?
I've traveled to Hawaii, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico and Bali. The highlights have been perfect waves, warm water, and meeting new friends.

What would be your ultimate surf destination and if you could take anyone, who would it be?
I totally want to go to the Mentawais. That would be tough to decide who to bring. Could I ball all my friends up into one??

Who's in your surf posse? Friends?
My posse is pretty big and it would be hard to name everyone, but the people I surf with the most are Sam, Kirra, Malia, Noah, Levi, and my brother Ty.

What are your goals for the future?
My goals for the future are to win WSA and NSSA titles … and to get a wetsuit and clothing sponsor … and to make the final of the USA Surfing Championships … and one day make it on the WCT.

Do you have any role models?
My Dad.

Any final words for the Ghetto Juice crowd?
I want to thank my little brother for surfing with me everyday and coming to all my contests. Big thanks to coach Simmo for coaching me and thanks to all my sponsors and of course my mom and dad.
