Dear Chris Cote,

Word up Chris! Hope this finds you well! I know you must be excited about all the opportunities flooding your way since the fallout of Transworld. You were there a long time and should be stoked with all your accomplishments. I've known you since you were a supergrom, and it's been epic seeing your career in surf editing flourish! Knowing how fun making surf mags is, I know it's gotta suck leaving TW, but don't fret. I've been there too!

I wanted to tell you something I've never told anyone. I'd say less than 4 people in the surf world know about this. The story is, in 1999 while I was Editor of Surfing I was offered the first job as Editor of this new magazine they were launching. At the time it didn't even have a name yet, although one of the main guys was wanting to call it Transworld Surf Machine. You might know who that would be, it's so him. Thinking I'd be looked upon at Surfing as a Traitor, I decided to stay at Surfing and not take the job. All these years TWS has been out, I'd always wondered what if I had taken that job? Many times I kicked myself for not taking it, because all the years I didn't work for a surf magazine just weren't as fun.

You're not going to miss surf mags at first. You're going to be overwhelmed with new opportunity, left and right. Ex-Editor of TW Surf is a huge title! A valuable title! You will do well! But, like me, several years will pass and you will start to truly miss it. You'll miss it a lot. I missed it so much that, ten years after leaving the post at Surfing, I enlisted the best graphic artist I knew Joe McElroy and we started our little surf rag. And it feels good … natural. Shoots, it feels great. Like I'm home again….

And this will happen to you. Maybe not the first three to five years, but in the second five to ten years…. That's when you'll start to go crazy. That's when you will think about your past life as a surf mag editor, and that's when you'll decide to get back into it. And … you'll be back

So my message to you, dear friend, is don't say goodbye, maybe just say you're taking a break because you'll be back sooner, even if it is later.

In the meantime, Let's Party!
